Nacre

Created for the 2023 Marist College Senior Thesis Exhibition. This 2D animation project follows my personal experience of the loss of my mother and highlights the nonlinear nature of grief.

I strung my pearls and watched them fall apart. Nacre, the mother of pearl. Oysters create strong, yet delicate, spheres as a defense mechanism caused by damage to their bodies. Remembering, I tried to heal what I lost through the process of creation, to recreate the warmth of nostalgia and animate life into it again. In my attempt to be an oyster, I create a pearl.

The projection of the animation onto a suspended sheet of translucent plastic helped evoke the fleeting and hazy qualities of memory.
